Disaster Response Volunteers

Agency: United Way Capital Area

Description: 2-1-1 Texas, a program of United Way Capital Area, provides free statewide, 24-hour access to health and human services and disaster information through its multilingual helpline.

2-1-1 Texas is an invaluable resource during disasters.
2-1-1 Texas provides disaster response before, during, and following disaster events of all types. Before a storm hits, 2-1-1 Texas staff register people with special needs to ensure they are prioritized for evacuation and have the needed transportation to get out of harm’s way.

During hurricane season, 2-1-1 Texas enhances its disaster response role in the community, partnering with local, statewide, and federal response efforts. When a hurricane or other natural disaster strikes, 2-1-1 programs across the state respond 24 hours a day, 7 days a week providing a vital link to critical information as people evacuate to safety.

In response to Amber alert signs which ask people to call 2-1-1 for help, 2-1-1 Texas provides information about evacuation orders, shelter areas, disaster routes, food sites, and transportation. 2-1-1 Texas also provides recovery information to help families devastated by disasters get back on their feet.

2-1-1 Texas needs Disaster Response Volunteers to answer crucial calls.
United Way Capital Area is taking a leadership role in ensuring the strength of 2-1-1 Texas. One way we’re doing that is by recruiting Disaster Response Volunteers. Disaster Response Volunteers relay information on shelters and evacuation routes. They direct people who wish to volunteer or donate goods to the agencies that can help them do so.

2-1-1 Texas needs volunteers who are caring, compassionate, creative problem solvers who want to directly help the public while working in a comfortable, professional setting. Bilingual speakers are especially valuable.
