Hands On Central Texas
MLK Day of Service 2007 Back To Main

MLK Day of Service
Saturday, January 19, 2008
Do something great. Sign up for an MLK Project!

Join us as we spend a few hours volunteering and remembering just how true those words are. Like Dr. King, Hands On Central Texas believes everyone can achieve greatness through service to others. The MLK Day of Service volunteer projects and activities will help you understand how you can use Dr. King’s blueprint for civic and social activism to affect social change in your community.

At the heart of our MLK Day of Service are four “Legacy Areas” that we will build awareness and civic action with our volunteers. They include:

  • Service
  • Diversity, Human Justice, Discrimination & Nonviolence
  • Community Revitalization
  • Poverty, Hunger and Homelessness

We will start the day with “Reflecting on the Dream,” a civic engagement session that will focus on Dr. King’s philosophies and why they are still relevant today. “Reflecting on the Dream” will feature performances, interactive activities and inspiring words from community groups and leaders including:

  • "Get Engaged!" with Theatre Action Project
  • "We have a Dream," a spoken word Cipher with The Cipher-Austin's Hip Hop Project
  • "Social Rhymes for Social Causes" with DJ Statik
  • "Reflecting on the Dream" with Reverend Joseph Parker, David Chapel Missionary Baptist Church
  • "MLK's Philosophy on Service" with State Representative Dawnna Dukes
  • "Engaging and Uniting our Communities" with David Balch, President & CPO of United Way Capital Area

The MLK Holiday is not only for celebration and remembrance, education and tribute, but above all, a day of service. It is a day of volunteering to feed the hungry, rehabilitate housing, tutoring those who can't read, mentoring youngsters, and many other projects for building the beloved community of his dream.
